Big Data has something to do with it.
My son John, a senior in college, came across his middle school year book the other day, and flipped to the section where each student listed what they wanted to be when they grew up. Half of the boys planned on playing for the NBA (even though the Warriors, our local team, weren’t so hot at the time). The girls in John’s class were more of a mixed bag; doctors, or more specifically pediatricians, lawyers, veterinarians. One said she wanted to be a public relations executive.
John, by the way, said he wanted to be a shoemaker. (Our last name is Shumaker. Get it?)
Enter Data Science
In 2016, 8th graders might want to consider growing up to become Data Scientists suggests Durgesh Kaushik in an article in Data Science Central. Let’s wait till the 8th graders are in high school to tell them that Data Science has been termed the sexiest job of the 21st Century.
“Big Data is everywhere and there is almost an urgent need to collect and preserve whatever data is being generated, for the fear of missing out on something important,” says Kaushik, “There is a huge amount of data floating around. What we do with it is all that matters right now. This is why Big Data Analytics is in the frontiers of IT.”
But in an interview with Manu Jeevan of Big Data Made Simple, Kirk Borne, Chief Data Scientist at Booz Allen Hamilton has this to say about aspiring data scientists:
I encourage aspiring career data scientists to be lifelong learners, to continue to explore new ways of doing things, to have a broad vision to where their talents can deliver great benefits to others, and to focus on developing the top four C’s of data science aptitudes: Curious, Communicative, Creative, and Courageous problem-solver.
In case you wondered, my son John, a psychology major, is likely going in another direction which I am sure he hopes will be sexy as well.
