What is Azure Service Fabric Mesh?

If you attended Microsoft Inspire in July, it’s likely that you noticed Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sprinkling the word “fabric”—metaphorically and literally– throughout his keynote presentation.

Later, it was announced that Azure Service Fabric Mesh, a “serverless” means of hosting applications, was available as a public preview.  Service Fabric Mesh tools are also available for download in Visual Studio 2017.

Azure Service Fabric Mesh is a microservices platform designed to make it easy for developers to package, deploy, manage and scale up reliable microservices and software containers. With Azure Service Fabric Mesh, developers have access to the same tools that Microsoft uses to run and manage its own services. This frees developers from managing infrastructure and allows them to focus on the performance of their microservices and container-based apps.

How is Service Fabric Mesh used?

  • Service Fabric Mesh powers many Microsoft services, including Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, Cortana, Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Intune, Azure Event Hubs, Azure IoT Hub, Dynamics 365, Skype for Business, and many core Azure services.
  • Service Fabric Mesh is tailored to create cloud native services that can start small, as needed, and grow to massive scale with hundreds or thousands of machines.
  • Azure Service Fabric Mesh is a fully-managed service that enables developers to deploy and operate containerized applications without having to manage VMs, storage or networking configuration, while keeping the enterprise-grade reliability, scalability, and mission-critical performance of Service Fabric. Service Fabric Mesh supports both Windows and Linux containers, so you can develop with the programming language and framework of your choice.

More options for developers

Azure Service Fabric Mesh gives developers many more options than traditional PaaS, especially when building new applications from scratch. Support for containers adds the ability to bring in packaged applications alongside your code. Similarly, using familiar frameworks and patterns can shorten the learning curve.
